2023 R U OK Mystery Pairs Race

30/08/2023 by Shirley Donnelly

Darwin Off-Road Cyclists have partnered with R U OK for this year’s Mystery Pairs Race.
Prepare for a fun novelty event in the New Pine Forest. The theme this year is “Bright and Colourful” – dress up yourself, dress up your bike.

When: Sunday 17th September 4.30pm Sharp
Plate Collection: From 3.30pm
Where: Howard Springs, New Pine Forest – Meet at the Old Shed parking area
Difficulty: Easy

This is a pairs race with a mystery partner, someone you potentially have never met before.Your name will be assigned a number, it will then be ran through our mysterious partner generator. Kinda like Tinder for MTB riders (but not really). You’ll then meet and greet your partner/mate for the day and work out your strategy. Who will do first lap? Who will trash talk opposing teams? Who’s up for drinks and BBQ? All those sorts of important things.

The Poker part of the race is even simpler, after the end of each lap a card is given to the rider, after the end of the race (6 laps) each team discards one card for a 5-card poker hand.  Show this hand to the organisers. Best hand wins!

Prizes

  • Prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd best hands. In the event of a draw, riders will be asked to draw a card from a deck and the highest card wins.
  • Random number draw for some prizes
  • Prize for most colourful rider, and another for most colourful bike (original paint job doesn’t count!)
  • Longest skid prize

Remember, skids are great fun on gravel and fire roads.  However, please remember to use bike control skills and avoid skidding on trails.  Skidding on trails damages the trail, especially if done repetitively on the approach to corners and obstacles.

Course

The course will be fairly short and each rider will complete 3 laps.

This event is aimed at maximum fun on an achievable course for all levels of riders.

Parking and Meeting point will be on the corner of Howard springs road, opposite the exit leading to Howard Springs reserve.

Sign on and plate collection at 3:30 PM racing starts at 4:30 PM.

Registration closes 9:00 pm Friday 15th September at 10pm.

‘THERE’S MORE TO SAY AFTER R U OK?’

R U OK social media tile

The last few years have been challenging for everyone and circumstances have made it even more important for us all to stay connected and, for those who are able, be willing to support those around us. In the lead-up to R U OK? Day we’ll help Australians know what to say when someone says they’re not OK and guide them through how they can continue a conversation that could change a life.
You don’t have to be an expert to keep the conversation going when someone says they’re not OK. By knowing what to say you can help someone feel supported and access appropriate help long before they’re in crisis, which can make a really positive difference to their life.
